How to save a video from X (Twitter) to your computer

X (formerly Twitter) has no button to download a video. Yet keeping a copy of a video you posted, of a tutorial, or of a clip to watch again offline is a common need. With AllVideoDownloader, it takes a few seconds.

What you need

• Chrome, or a browser that installs extensions from the Chrome Web Store (Edge, Brave, Opera);
• the AllVideoDownloader extension, free to start.

In 4 steps

1. Open the post on x.com, or simply scroll your timeline.
2. Look at the AllVideoDownloader icon in the toolbar: it lights up and shows how many videos are on screen.
3. Click the icon: each video shows up with its thumbnail and the text of the post. Pick the quality — the best one is selected by default.
4. Click Download: the MP4 file lands in your Downloads folder, named after the author and the text of the post.

Only the videos shown on screen are offered: no need to sort through dozens of unknown files.

Why it is harder than it looks

X doesn't serve its videos as a plain file. It cuts them into small pieces of a few seconds, in several qualities, following a format called HLS. That's why a right-click "Save video as…" doesn't work.

AllVideoDownloader reads the list of available qualities, downloads the pieces of the one you picked and assembles them into a single MP4 file, right on your computer. Nothing goes through our servers.

Keep only the sound

For a speech, an interview or a song, pick Audio only in the list of qualities. You get an M4A file — or an MP3, if you prefer it in the extension's settings.

What about copyright?

Only save what you have the right to save: your own videos, royalty-free content, or where the law allows it. When in doubt, ask the author for permission.
